BRANT ROD AND GUN CLUB TALLGRASS PRAIRIE CHRONICLES

Welcome to our story of re-introducing a Tallgrass Prairie

These pages are the only ones available on the internet that show
step by step what we had to do in order to accomplish our goals of
creating a Tallgrass Prairie!

A lot of time went into researching how to work the ground, get rid of already present grasses, weeds etc.
and researching which grasses and flowers will thrive in this harsh climate, how to plant them and how to keep them growing.

THE CLEAN - UP:

2 applications of Round-Up were applied to the field during the Summer & Fall of 2005
February 25th, 2006 seen 6 volunteers spend 8 hours each removing any/all obstacles in the way of creating our Tallgrass Prairie.

GROUND BREAK:

Ground break took place on April 14th, 2006. A total of 13.5 hours were spent on discing and harrowing the field over the course of the next 4 weeks.

THE SEED:

9 kg. of seed doesn’t sound like much, but it took 5 of us nearly 4 hours each to mix it all thoroughly for even distribution.

MISHAPS:

I don't know about your projects but....
just when we think everything is going well and things are under control
something always "throws a wrench into our gears"

A FLAT TIRE
BROKEN SPREADER

and just when we get the seed ready for transport...

THE WINDS PICK UP

but all is well and it's time to plant!!!

The 2006 Farmer’s Almanac recommended planting be done by the Full Moon.

The Full Moon just happened to fall on the Mother’s Day Weekend in May.....
and what a wonderful Mother's Day it was for Anne Pray and Nadja Stevens!!
5 B.R.G.C. members took turns walking the 5 acre site to plant all the seed with a good old fashioned improvised seed spreader

News travels fast in the wilds!!!...
Deer tracks spotted May 24th, 2006
Wild Turkey tracks spotted June 5th, 2006

While we let Nature takes it's course with the sunshine and rains to help our Tallgrass prairie grow
a firebreak was established around the perimeter of the Prairie.

lo' and behold - we have sproutage!!
this picture was taken June 5th, 2005 - less than 1 month since planting!

The first cutting of the Tallgrass Prairie took place in July 2006.
This is done to help contain the weed growth that almost always takes over any new Prairie planting

An abundance of sunshine and rain sure does help the weeds grow
a second cutting was needed again in August.
but why on earth is Ken stopped in the middle of the field when he's suppose to be cutting the weeds??

3 months into the growing season and we have our first blooms!!!
